Whitfield opted not to seek another council term to pursue the mayor’s office.

For the City Council, incumbent Melanie Long is joined by Wesley Johnson, Toyin Wakil Olaoluwa, Joseph Bastian, Keith Colquitt, and Joanne Byrne in the contest for three seats.

Longtime Councilwoman Anne Huntsinger is not seeking re-election this year.

Walton County School District will offer a free disability screening for children ages 3 to 5 on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Appointments are required for this important service, which aims to identify young children who might need special education or related support.

The screenings assess speech and language, motor skills, vision and hearing, and overall learning development.

Parents or guardians with concerns about their child’s growth or abilities are urged to schedule an appointment.

A determined group of Walton County residents rallied on the steps of the Historic Courthouse, urging county leaders to roll back a recent 19.55% property tax hike.

Though fewer than 20 protestors gathered, they delivered over 3,300 petition signatures in just six days, reflecting widespread frustration with the county’s decision.

The grassroots group Walton In Action led the petition drive, hoping to pressure commissioners into calling a special meeting before the new rate takes effect September 1.

Residents expressed anger that their voices were being dismissed, and several criticized the Board—especially Chairman David Thompson—for what they called a lack of transparency and respect.

Many questioned the justification for the increase, including cited jail operating costs.

Despite community efforts, the required votes to reverse the hike are lacking, but opponents vowed to keep fighting for local taxpayers.
