The holiday season is about giving, and one beloved local tradition is preparing to make Christmas a little more magical for children throughout Walton and Barrow counties.
The Walton Barrow Board of REALTORS® will host its 17th Annual Toy Trot 5K on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at Russell Middle School in Winder. The festive event combines fitness, community spirit, holiday fun, and a mission that goes far beyond the finish line.
Proceeds from the annual race benefit local Shop with a Hero programs, which provide Christmas shopping experiences for children who might otherwise go without gifts during the holiday season.
And this year, organizers have set an ambitious fundraising goal of $30,000 to help bring Christmas joy to even more local families.
More Than Just a Christmas Shopping Trip
For the children who benefit from Shop with a Hero, the experience is about much more than receiving presents.
Children in need are identified through the Walton and Barrow county school systems. Each child receives funds to go Christmas shopping alongside a local community hero, such as a police officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services professional.
Together, they walk the aisles, select gifts, and enjoy an experience designed to make each child feel special.
After the shopping trip, volunteers help wrap the gifts, adding another personal touch to an already memorable day.
But what makes this program particularly meaningful is what some children choose to purchase.
While many eagerly select toys they have been dreaming about, others use the opportunity to buy Christmas presents for loved ones.
Some even choose basic necessities, including personal hygiene products and everyday essentials, because their families are struggling to meet those needs.
Those moments serve as powerful reminders that the holidays can be especially difficult for families facing financial hardships.
The Shop with a Hero program provides more than gifts. It creates positive connections between children and first responders, offers families some relief during a challenging season, and reminds young people that their community cares about them. Read More... |
