The Loganville and Walnut Grove communities are mourning the sudden loss of Nic Smith, the 20-year-old former Walnut Grove High School star and University of Kentucky football player, who died Monday.

University of Kentucky officials confirmed that Smith was found in a campus residence hall,

with no foul play suspected, and police are investigating alongside the local coroner’s office.

Smith, affectionately known as “Happy” or “Big Happ,” was a defensive lineman for the Wildcats and had just redshirted his first season while preparing for his sophomore year.

A standout at Walnut Grove, Smith made a major impact on and off the field, earning all-area honors in football and playing basketball.

He was also known for his positive energy, love of cooking, and dreams of starting a food business.

Counseling services are being offered as friends, family, and teammates remember Smith for both his athletic talent and uplifting spirit.

Quote Of The Day

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” — Coretta Scott King

Loganville residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste this Saturday, June 13, at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville.

The event, hosted by Gwinnett Water Resources and Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, runs from 8 a.m. to noon, offering a free and secure way to clear out old paint, pesticides, automotive fluids, batteries, and other dangerous items.

Improper disposal of these materials poses risks to waterways, wildlife, and local plumbing systems.

Residents may bring up to five containers—like laundry baskets or copy paper boxes—of qualifying waste, but containers will not be returned.

Accepted items include pool chemicals, motor oil, household cleaners, and fluorescent bulbs.

The Gwinnett County Fairgrounds are located at 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway, with entry at the main light.

Early arrival is recommended due to expected traffic.
