A routine Loganville City Council work session took an unexpected turn as Councilwoman Melanie Long objected to aligning the city charter’s residency requirements for office seekers with Georgia state law and introduced an unrelated proposal for random drug testing among elected officials.
City Attorney Paul Rosenthal explained that Loganville’s charter needs updating to require only one year of residency, matching state rules, rather than the current two.
Long argued the change could harm local governance by weakening leaders’ ties to the community, calling the state mandate a “disservice.”
She urged the council to wait for possible election reforms from the legislature, noting there’s no election for two years and no public challenge to current requirements.
Rosenthal emphasized the need for timely charter revisions and later suggested a closed executive session, after which no action was taken.
Long’s call for random drug testing received mixed but mostly supportive responses from her colleagues, though legal questions remain about the proposal’s enforceability. Read More... |
The Loganville Rotary Club turned a night at Topgolf into a meaningful investment in the future, rallying the community for youth-focused causes.
Twelve energetic teams — representing churches, businesses, and local supporters — gathered for a spirited fundraiser, united by a shared commitment to supporting Loganville’s youth programs and scholarships.
Throughout the evening, friendly competition blended with a sense of purpose as teams tracked scores and cheered each other on, keeping the event’s mission at the forefront.
Graystone Church secured the championship after strong performances, but the true victory was for local students set to benefit from the event’s proceeds.
Funds raised will fuel Rotary-backed youth initiatives, expanding opportunities for education, leadership, and civic engagement among area youths.
This tournament proved community engagement and giving can come together — ensuring Loganville’s next generation is well supported. Read More... |

Two men from Loganville and Atlanta face federal charges after a major DEA-led operation disrupted an alleged fentanyl trafficking ring in metro Atlanta.
Authorities say Osiel Adame-Gomez, 27, and Miguel Velazquez-Garcia, 26, were arrested in February during coordinated stings in Doraville, Dunwoody, and Stone Mountain.
On February 5, Adame-Gomez was apprehended in Dunwoody after agents tracked him and discovered a backpack with one kilogram of fentanyl—worth about $30,000—in a storage unit.
Four days later, Velazquez-Garcia was stopped in Stone Mountain, where police seized another kilogram of fentanyl from his vehicle. Further searches at his associated residences uncovered three more kilograms and cash believed tied to drug sales.
Both men remain in federal custody, awaiting trial. The investigation is part of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department effort targeting cartels and drug traffickers across Georgia. Read More... |
