Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks New Chapter for O’Kelly Memorial Library
By Ray Lane, Loganville Pulse Staff Writer

Under bright spring skies on Tuesday, April 16, local officials, community members, and library supporters gathered at the corner of Main Street, Covington Street, and Lucy Street in downtown Loganville to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new O’Kelly Memorial Library.

The event marked a major milestone in a project that has been years in the making—one that aims to bring expanded resources and a more modern facility to serve Loganville and the surrounding Walton County community.

The new library will replace the current O’Kelly Memorial Library located at the intersection of Highways 78 and 20. Though the building is moving, the beloved name will remain, honoring the library's long history and significance in the community.

Phase one of the new facility will total 10,833 square feet, a significant upgrade from the existing 7,162-square-foot building.

While some city council members have expressed concerns over project costs and potential “value engineering” that could affect building materials and amenities, the mood at the groundbreaking was largely optimistic. Supporters highlighted the potential for the library to grow in future phases and even attract additional grant funding and community donations.

The Friends of the O’Kelly Memorial Library, who were also present at the ceremony, are working toward a fundraising goal to support the completion and future expansion of the facility.

As shovels hit the ground and dirt turned beneath the ceremonial banner, the event symbolized more than just a construction project—it represented a renewed investment in education, literacy, and community in the heart of Loganville.

Remembering Deputy Jake Monk: A Hero, A Father, A Friend
By Ray Lane, Loganville Pulse Staff Writer

Loganville and all of Walton County are mourning the loss of one of their own this week. Deputy Jake Monk, a respected law enforcement officer, proud soldier, and devoted father, tragically passed away from injuries sustained in an off-duty traffic accident. His untimely death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and the entire community.

Deputy Monk was known for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and sense of duty both as a deputy with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and as a veteran who served his country with honor. But to those who knew him best, his most important role was that of father to two young children, who must now carry forward his legacy without him by their side.

In the face of this heartbreaking loss, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office is leaning on the community and each other for strength. “Jake was not only a fine deputy but an equally good soldier,” shared the department. “More importantly, Jake was the father of two precious children who now will never know their father.”

As the community grieves, they are also beginning to rally in support of Deputy Monk’s family. Contributions can be made through Deputies Beyond the Badge, a nonprofit organization supporting law enforcement families. All donations made in Jake Monk’s name will go directly to his family to help them through the difficult days ahead.

In times like these, words can feel insufficient. Yet the verse shared by the Sheriff’s Office offers some comfort:
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4

As we remember Jake Monk, may we honor his service, cherish his memory, and carry his spirit forward—with courage, compassion, and community.
