WALTON COUNTY, GA — Knowing where a fire extinguisher is located is one thing. Knowing how to use it effectively when a fire breaks out is another.
Walton County Fire Rescue is offering hands-on fire extinguisher training designed to give local businesses, schools, organizations and community groups the knowledge and confidence they need to respond during a fire emergency.
Rather than limiting the program to classroom instruction, participants get an opportunity to practice using electronic fire extinguisher simulators. The equipment creates a realistic training experience without the smoke, mess or residue associated with an actual fire.
During the training, participants learn how fire extinguishers work, when they should be used and how to properly operate one. They can then put that knowledge into practice using the electronic simulation equipment in a controlled environment.
The goal is to help participants become more comfortable with a piece of emergency equipment that many people see regularly but may have never actually used.
Training Comes to Your Facility
One of the program's biggest advantages is that Walton County Fire Rescue can bring the training directly to participating organizations. Sessions are available at the requesting group's facility, making the program particularly useful for businesses interested in workplace safety training, schools preparing faculty and staff, and civic or community organizations looking to improve emergency preparedness.
The hands-on format allows participants to develop practical skills rather than trying to learn them for the first time during an actual emergency.
While fire extinguishers can play an important role in dealing with a small, manageable fire, personal safety remains the priority. Knowing when an extinguisher can be used safely — and when it is time to evacuate and call 911 — is an important part of fire preparedness.

Does the training cover kitchen fires? That’s my biggest worry at home.
