GRAYSON, GA
Residents of Grayson and the Loganville area are still processing the news after a fatal shooting over the Memorial Day weekend led to the arrest of a local woman on murder charges.

According to Gwinnett County Police, 48-year-old Stephany Byrom of Grayson has been charged in connection with the death of 44-year-old Sharell Canty, also of Grayson, following a shooting that investigators are describing as a domestic-related homicide.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning in a residential neighborhood off Wilkerson Way, located just west of downtown Grayson and only a few miles from Loganville.

Neighbor Discovers Victim

Police were called to a home in the 300 block of Wilkerson Way at approximately 8:42 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor reportedly discovered a deceased woman inside the residence and contacted authorities.

When officers arrived, they found Canty dead from what investigators later determined was a gunshot wound.

Detectives and crime scene investigators spent much of the day processing the scene, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses. News reports from the scene showed multiple police vehicles in the neighborhood as investigators worked to piece together what happened.

Murder Charges Filed

Following the investigation, Gwinnett County Police arrested Byrom and charged her with:

  • Malice Murder

  • Felony Murder

  • Aggravated Assault

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony

She was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail.

At this time, police have not released details regarding a motive or the exact circumstances that led to the shooting.

Limited Details Released

While authorities have classified the case as a domestic-related homicide, investigators have not publicly disclosed the nature of the relationship between Byrom and Canty.

Police have also not released:

  • Information about the firearm involved

  • Whether there were any prior domestic incidents connected to the residence

  • How long Canty had been deceased before she was discovered

  • Details about upcoming court appearances or bond hearings

The investigation remains active.

Quiet Neighborhood Shaken

Neighbors told local media outlets they were surprised by the large police presence and described the area as a quiet residential community where serious violent crime is uncommon.

For many residents in Grayson and neighboring Loganville, the incident serves as a reminder that tragic acts of violence can occur even in communities that are generally considered safe and family-oriented.

Investigation Continues

Gwinnett County Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact Gwinnett County Police detectives or Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta.

Additional details are expected to be released as the investigation moves forward and the case enters the court system.

As of Tuesday evening, Stephany Byrom remains charged in connection with the death of Sharell Canty, and all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
