American Legion Post 233 in Loganville has been officially designated a Purple Heart Legion Post, recognizing the courage and sacrifices of military service members who were wounded or killed in action.

The designation was formalized during a special ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026. Purple Heart recipients in attendance were individually recognized, along with family members and relatives representing recipients who could not be present.

The ceremony began with the posting of the colors by the American Legion Post 233 Color Guard, led by Jerry Mahaffey. Post Chaplain David Bondy delivered the opening prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem, performed by Crystal Wilson.

Stan Mauldin served as master of ceremonies and spoke about eligibility for the Purple Heart. Louis Zayas, commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, attended as the ceremony’s guest speaker.

Loganville Mayor Brandon Whitfield then read the official proclamation designating Post 233 as a Purple Heart Legion Post.

The proclamation recognizes the Purple Heart as the nation’s oldest military decoration still awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces. Its origins date to 1782, when Gen. George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit.

It also acknowledges the veterans of Loganville and Walton County who earned the Purple Heart through “noble sacrifice and selfless duty,” including members of American Legion Post 233.

“American Legion Post 233 in Loganville, Georgia, has long served as a pillar of patriotism, service, and community support, honoring the men and women who have courageously defended our nation,” the proclamation states.

The declaration calls upon Post members, citizens and civic leaders to reflect on the courage, heroism and sacrifices of Purple Heart recipients and to ensure their service is never forgotten.

The proclamation was signed by Post 233 Commander Michael S. Madsen, Loganville Mayor Brandon Whitfield, Post 233 Adjutant Tony Somphonephackdy and Military Order of the Purple Heart Commander Lou Zayas.

A particularly meaningful portion of the ceremony recognized the Purple Heart recipients who were present. Relatives of Purple Heart recipients were also honored, acknowledging both the service members and the families who preserve their memories and carry forward their legacies.

Chaplain Bondy led a moment of silence and remembrance for those who sacrificed in service to the country.

Commander Madsen also offered special recognition to the American Legion Post 233 Auxiliary for its continued support and dedication, thanking Auxiliary President Cathy Hedges and the organization’s members for their contributions.

The ceremony concluded with the recovery of the colors, closing a historic day for Post 233 and reaffirming its commitment to honoring America’s combat-wounded veterans and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
