Gwinnett County Marks America's 250th Anniversary with Month-Long Celebration

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA - As America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Gwinnett County is inviting residents to take part in a month-long celebration recognizing the nation's past, present, and future.

The county's Realizing America's Vision: Celebrating 250 Years initiative runs from July 4 through August 2, bringing together residents through educational exhibits, family-friendly events, historical programs, and community activities across Gwinnett.

County leaders say the celebration is about more than reflecting on history. It is also an opportunity to recognize the people and communities that continue to shape Gwinnett today.

"Our community is made stronger by people from every background, culture, and walk of life who have chosen to lay roots, build opportunity, and contribute to something greater," organizers said. "Our celebration honors the pioneers, innovators, public servants, families, and communities whose contributions strengthen Gwinnett and enrich the American experience."

One of the county's most significant historical connections to America's founding comes from the very name "Gwinnett."

A Founding Father Lives On in Gwinnett's Name

Gwinnett County is named after Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Born in Gloucestershire, England, in 1735, Gwinnett later settled in Georgia and became active in colonial government. In 1776, he was elected to represent Georgia in the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence alongside fellow Georgians Lyman Hall and George Walton.

His signature, added to the historic document on August 2, 1776, permanently linked his name to the birth of the United States. Today, Gwinnett County continues to honor that legacy while celebrating the diverse communities that have helped shape the county over the past two and a half centuries.

Community Events Planned Across the County

Residents will have multiple opportunities to participate throughout July as Gwinnett County hosts informational displays and activities at popular community events.

Scheduled appearances include:

• July 3: Red, White, and Boom at Lillian Webb Park in Norcross from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
• July 10: Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• July 11: McDaniel Farm Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• July 16: Family Tram Ride at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center in Buford from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• July 18: Back-to-School Bash at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• July 25: Freeman's Mill historical program from 9 a.m. to noon.
• August 1: Historic celebration at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse in Lawrenceville from noon to 6 p.m.

As the nation reflects on 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed, Gwinnett County's celebration offers residents an opportunity to connect with local history while recognizing the people who continue to write the county's story today.
